Retention Marketing

WhatsApp and email flows that keep customers coming back

We design consent-led WhatsApp and email programmes that turn first orders into repeat orders, so the customers you pay to acquire keep paying back.

What this service is

Retention marketing is the set of messages and offers that bring existing customers back to buy again. For D2C brands, Encompass Ideas builds it on two owned channels, WhatsApp and email: collecting consent properly, connecting store and customer data, and running automated flows such as welcome, cart recovery, post-purchase, replenishment and win-back, all measured on repeat purchase and revenue per message.

Customers buy once and disappear.

Acquisition gets the first order. Without a planned follow-up, most of that spend is never earned back, and every month starts from zero.

  • Repeat purchase rate is low or unknown.
  • Abandoned carts and browsing sessions are not followed up.
  • WhatsApp and email are used for occasional blasts, not planned flows.
  • Customer lists are not segmented by behaviour or purchase history.
  • Nobody is sure which messages earn revenue and which only annoy.
  • Consent and opt-out practices are unclear.

How the retention programme runs

  1. Retention Audit

We review your customer data, repeat-purchase patterns, existing messages and consent practices to find where customers drop off and what is already working.

  2. Consent & Channel Setup

We set up compliant opt-in for WhatsApp and email, sender authentication and a clean unsubscribe path, so the programme can scale without risking deliverability or trust.

  3. Core Flows

We design and launch the flows that matter most: welcome, browse and cart recovery, post-purchase, replenishment and win-back, with WhatsApp and email each doing the job they suit best.

  4. Segmentation & Offers

We segment customers by behaviour and purchase history and match the message and offer to the segment, rather than sending everyone the same thing.

  5. Measure & Optimize

We report repeat purchase rate and revenue per message against a baseline, test copy, timing and channel, and keep improving the flows.

Why brands choose us for retention

  • Consent first

Flows are built on proper opt-in and clear unsubscribe paths, which protects deliverability and customer trust.

  • Two channels, each in its role

WhatsApp for immediacy and service, email for richer storytelling and scale, planned together.

  • Connected to acquisition and the store

Retention is planned with the ads and the storefront, so the customer experience holds together after the first order.

Best fit

  • D2C brands with a growing customer base and low repeat purchase.
  • Brands that already run paid acquisition and want to earn more from each customer.
  • Consumables and replenishment categories such as beauty, wellness and nutrition.

Not the right fit

  • Brands with very few customers and no consistent traffic yet.
  • Teams who want to message people who have not opted in.
  • Anyone expecting guaranteed repeat-purchase uplift.

Questions we get asked

What is retention marketing?
It is the planned communication that brings existing customers back to purchase again, using owned channels such as WhatsApp and email. It focuses on repeat purchase, customer lifetime value and revenue earned per message.
Why use WhatsApp and email together?
WhatsApp is fast and personal, suited to reminders, order updates and replies; email is better for richer content and larger sends. Used together, each can do the job it suits best.
Do customers need to opt in to WhatsApp messages?
Yes. Meta requires opt-in before a business sends messages on the WhatsApp Business Platform. Marketing templates are charged per delivered message, and there are rules about the 24-hour customer service window. See Meta’s documentation on sending messages and pricing. Rates and rules change, so we confirm the current position when we scope your programme.
What do email providers expect from senders?
Large mailbox providers expect authenticated sending and an easy way to unsubscribe, and they penalise high spam-complaint rates. We set up authentication and unsubscribe handling as part of the programme. See Google’s email sender guidelines.
Does data protection law affect this?
Yes. India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act and its Rules, notified in November 2025, bring notice and consent obligations that apply from 13 May 2027 under the current Rules. We build consent capture with this in mind. This is general information, not legal advice; confirm with your counsel.
Which flows should we start with?
Usually welcome, cart and browse recovery, and post-purchase, because they reach customers closest to a decision. Replenishment and win-back follow once there is enough purchase history.
