Start-ups and SMEs rarely have budgets for mass media. Influencer marketing offers another route to awareness: reaching the right people through voices they already trust. This playbook covers how to do it well, using recent Indian and global research.
Choose by audience, not follower count
The best creator for you is the one whose audience matches your customers. In the WPP Media and Kantar India report, brands said they weigh engagement rate (39%) and content quality (36%) ahead of vanity metrics, and 83% of marketers said finding the right talent is hard.
Smaller creators often show stronger engagement. HypeAuditor figures, as reported by Agency Reporter, put average Instagram engagement at 1.78% for accounts under 10,000 followers, against 0.33% for accounts above one million. This is second-hand data, so use it as a direction, not a promise. Reported pricing for nano and micro creators varies widely between sources, so ask for current quotes instead of relying on published ranges.
Check authenticity before you commit
- Read the comments: are they relevant and varied, or generic and repetitive?
- Look for sudden follower spikes.
- Check whether the audience location matches where the creator says their audience is.
- Compare engagement to follower count.
- Ask for platform-level audience analytics, not screenshots.
- Consider authenticity tools such as HypeAuditor or Modash.
Plan the campaign around objectives
A curated campaign has a clear message, a defined audience and a way to measure results. In Influencer Marketing Hub's 2026 global survey of 600+ respondents, brand awareness was the most selected objective. Promo codes (45.9%), affiliate links (26%) and native shop features (25%) were the most common measurement tools. The sample is global, but the tools work in India too.
- Set one clear objective: awareness, traffic, sign-ups or sales.
- Match the objective to a measurable signal, such as a unique code or tracked link.
- Check creator fit: audience, values and content style.
- Review results during and after the campaign, and adjust.
Follow the disclosure rules
- ASCI requires an upfront, prominent label such as "Ad" on paid or gifted content, not hidden among hashtags. ASCI's guide for influencers also says creators should not talk about a product or service they have not tried.
- CCPA's endorsement guidelines require endorsers to give genuine, current opinions and to disclose material connections. Penalties can reach ₹10 lakh for a first violation and ₹50 lakh for repeat violations.
- This is a summary, not legal advice. Please have counsel review your contracts and briefs.
Final thoughts
Targeted influencer marketing works best as a considered programme, not a one-off post. Results differ widely by brand and category, so start small, measure properly and build on what works.
